During the electro-polishing of stainless steel, the metal is taken off the polished metal object’s surface ion by ion. The process is the reverse of electroplating and involves electrochemistry and the basic principles of electrolysis. The object to be electropolished is dipped in an electrolyte, which is then subject to a direct electrical current. The nearby metal conductor forms the cathode, while the object to be electro-polished forms the anode. In electro-polishing, the polarised surface film is exposed to the combined effects of the electrolyte’s temperature and agitation, a saturation of the surface with dissolved metal, and gassing (oxygen), which happens with electrochemical metal removal.

Why should you choose electropolishing?

Electro-polishing gives a high-quality, smoothened metal surface. The metal’s surfaces are covered in a film of variable thickness during the process – the film is thickest over micro depressions and thinnest over micro projections. Wherever the film is thinnest, electrical resistance is the lowest, leading to the highest rate of metallic dissolution. Microscopic high points are selectively removed by electropolishing at a rate faster than the rate at which the corresponding micro-depressions are attacked. The stock formed is then removed as metallic salt. Under certain conditions, metal removal can be controlled and limited to 0.0001 to 0.0025 inches.

The process removes burrs, sharp edges, and other surface imperfections from the stainless steel surface. An enhanced surface is obtained by reducing the high spots and eliminating microscopic nicks and any altered metal surface structure.
